Our Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the wargames club, when is it open, and are there any membership fees?
We are situated within the Columbia Community Centre, Oxclose Road, Washington. We are open most Sundays (times vary) for the pursuit of all things wargaming. If you wish to come along, click here to email us and get the right time to visit us. Annual membership fees are £10. Unwaged pay £5.
What games do you play?
Warhammer Ancients, Warhammer ECW, WRG 6th, DBM, Napoleonic POW, and many others are played in a friendly atmosphere - some of our long-serving members have created a few home-grown systems that are also played. We also have a large collection of boardgames that we also play, and we run a few roleplay sessions too. We can also accommodate any wargaming system you wish to play as long as you show us how to play it.
What is "Warrior"?
"Warrior" is our very successful wargames convention that we have held annually for many years. The venue for our show is Gateshead Civic Centre - the home of Gateshead Council. A good selection of traders attend our show. We also have competitions occuring - namely Warhammer Ancients, DBM, and WRG 6th. Display and participation games are also present, as well as the ever-popular "bring & buy" stall. For our thirsty adult attendees, a licensed bar is available. A small food and soft drink kiosk is also available. Note: the bar and kiosk are operated by Gateshead Council and not by us.
Can you explain what the heraldic shield is for on the front page?
The original Anglo-Saxon name for Washington was 'Hwaesingatun' ('Hwaes' was a Saxon Chief, 'inga' meaning family of, and 'tun' an estate - the estate of Hwae's (Wassa's) family). Through some mispronunciation, the village became known as Wessyngton. In 1183, a Norman called William de Hertburn became the lord of the area and changed his name, as they often did, to William de Wessyngton, and the shield is his coat of arms. Through the next few centuries, Wessyngton became Washington. One of William's descendents is George Washington, later to become the first President of the United States. If William hadn't changed his name, the capitol of the USA would be called Hertburn!
